The New Taiwanese Cinema Movement emerged in a restless era. The films, which were made in such a difficult time, have become all-time classics, because it is closely related to the ground-breaking themes and innovative shooting methods. This time, we select three films from Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Wan Jen respectively with ‘strangers’ in the city as the commonality. Three films, three situations, numerous different fates are intertwined.
A young man comes to the seemingly prosperous Taipei in search of his sister. Crimes, poverty, family troubles as such are all he sees in this alienated city. In the 80s, Taiwan economy boom and city expansion caused problems in different aspects, especially the lowlifes. The hustlers and prostitutes in the film are very much abandoned by the city. Most of the Taiwanese films at that time deal with the city-rural relationships, Super Citizen, on the other hand, focuses on contrasting the lowlifes with the prosperity of the society. Even watching it today, we may share their feelings.
